Mobile Real EstateMobile is a unique and wonderful city in many ways. Situated at the junction of the Mobile River and Mobile Bay on the northern Gulf of Mexico, Mobile is the only seaport in the state of Alabama and the state’s third most populous city. The city dates back to 1702, when it was founded as part of French Louisiana. Today, Mobile is an exciting place to be, a wonderful place for families, and to ton to offer prospective home buyers.
Mobile consistently ranks above state averages in a number of key educational metrics. In 2010, 85.2% of Mobile residents over the age of 25 were high school graduates, well above the statewide average of 80.8% and slightly above the national average of 84.6%. The percentage of same residents with a bachelor's degree or higher (26.0%) also compares favorably to state and national averages (21.5% and 27.5%). The Mobile County Public School System has a student-to-teacher ratio substantially better than the nationwide average. Mobile also boasts the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, which was founded in 1989 to identify, challenge, and educate future leaders among selected Alabama high school students.
Mobile's economy has experienced a significant turnaround in the past two decades. Despite the global economic downturn of the past several years, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated Mobile's unemployment rate at 7.8% in 2009, which was still well below the national average for the year.
With its mixed British, French, Spanish, Creole and African heritage, Mobile is truly a city unlike any other in the state or even the country and is widely considered one of the cultural centers of the Gulf Coast. Mobile has several art museums, a symphony orchestra, a professional opera, a professional ballet company, and a large concentration of historic architecture. Mobile also has the oldest organized carnival celebration in the United States, dating to the 18th century.
Last but not least, Mobile has lower than national averages on crime, a temperate climate and a myriad of outdoors activities for the whole family. Good public schools, an economy on the upswing, tons of history and culture, safe neighborhoods and good weather – Mobile really is a great place to live.
